This story is by a member of the team at Christian charity, The Family Trust, who ran prayer spaces during the spring term at two schools in Kent.
The activities worked well; they particularly enjoyed the rainbow scratch cards which were a new addition. By the end of each week, it looked like an art gallery full of crosses, flowers and a variety of images. As usual, the bubble tubes and cushions were a favourite area. Some of the prayers the students wrote were humbling, inspiring, emotional and honest. This led to conversations about considering how we should be kind to others as we never know what they are going through. Many wrote that the people who inspired them not to give up were their family and friends.
Students from other faiths talked about their points of view, it was good to appreciate the similarities and differences and for them to feel comfortable to access the activities in a meaningful and personal way.
We had conversations about what a Christian is and what it means to have faith in God. They also asked questions about how God helps us.
Both schools were grateful and appreciated the prayer and reflection spaces. Staff said that their students really need this kind of experience to give them time to reflect and think. Several staff joined the students and took part in the activities.
As usual our wonderful volunteers were keen to get involved. We are very fortunate to have people from local churches who are passionate about young people and are excellent at working with them in a prayer space setting. Our volunteers enjoyed the experience, and we are hugely grateful to them for their time and support.
It is a joy and a privilege to provide this kind of prayer and reflection space for students and staff in their school. We look forward to the next one at the end of this academic year.
